Thames (NZ): 150 Event - True Tales Book Launch at The Treasury

After months of work, The Treasury today (20 August 2017) launched the latest book in their 'True Tales' series. The stories have been contributed by people from around New Zealand and overseas; expertly collated into a book by Geraldine Dunwoodie.

The Stories cover family and personal memories of Thames, Thames' Haunted House, The House of Hotunui, Electricity to Thames, McDonnell Motors and so much more........

The book launched today was "True Tales of Thames" published by the Treasury, The Coromandel Heritage Trust. These books provide a valuable source of revenue for The Treasury, and are definitely worth a look. Available for sale at The Treasury and online via their shop. The book is A4 format, soft cover, has many black & white photos, and is 300 pages long. (ISBN978-0-9941489-0-2)

Thames (NZ): Archives opening day

Well Thamesites of old learnt to cope with the weather and flooding; as a result of today's conditions the quiet scene below is because the opening ceremony is being held in the nearby St James Church Hall. Very soon the building will be officially opened!

The sun is trying to break through as I write, so fitting to finish with this beautiful view from Mount Pleasant, looking down at the lower section of Grey Street - Upper Grey Street is now known as Mount Pleasant Road. It is a mystery how many of the old streets of Thames just suddenly seem to change their name and why this should be? Or more importantly why it should be allowed.

Thames (NZ): one more sleep till the Grand Opening of the Treasury Archive

There may be a storm on the horizon for Saturday 15th March 2014, but it will also mark the official opening of the Treasury Archive Building. The street today is full of cars - as last minute arrangements are attended to. The fence is complete and restores the image of years past, when the wrought iron fence fronted the Thames Carnegie Library.

The official opening is at 2pm - if you are in town, drop in for a visit, it will be the only time that the general public will get to see inside the archive building.

Thames (NZ): Latest photo of The Treasury and Archives

Seems a long time since I've updated on the Archive in Queen Street...all the activity has been inside as the team at the Treasury (The Coromandel Heritage Trust) prepare for the opening of the building in March. Today, Saturday 8 February the site is packed with blocks, blocks and more blocks! The fence is underway.

The Archive will be officially opened at 2.00pm on Saturday 15th March by Dr Jock Phillips who was formerly Chief Historian within the Department of Internal Affairs and Ministry of Culture and Heritage, then Concept Leader in History at Te Papa. Dr Phillips is now the General Editor of Te Ara, the Encyclopaedia of New Zealand.

Thames (NZ): The Treasury & Archives 30th Nov 2013

Dramatic changes underway to the outward appearance of the Treasury complex, Queen Street, Thames. The northern part of the concrete base has been poured and the preparations have been made for the southern end section. At present a temporary wooden barrier has been erected, which allows the passer-by to see how impressive the fence will be.

Opinion on the style of the new Archives building continues to divide some, the new fence has the opportunity to put this to rest and demonstrate how the the two buildings and time periods can blend together.

Plenty to report today, most noticeably that the construction fence is down. The ground has been cleared and just some wood remains stacked at the south end, by the Queen Street road frontage. The final touches are being added to the inside of the building.

Thames (NZ): The Treasury Archives 17th September 2013

Tuesday is always a busy day at The Treasury building in Thames. The Indexing group meet to index the resources available at The Treasury, and this information is then available in The Treasury index. The Index aims to make researching easier and more effective, the plus being that you can check it out online from your home.

Today when I dropped in the rooms were empty - the indexers were found outside inspecting the cladding that is going on the walls. Hard to do justice to explaining how great and effective the building is looking. Without saying anymore...a sneak preview is below. Watch this space for more, as the whole building is transformed...from chrysalis to monarch butterfly phase is underway.

Today outside the archives building, signs of activity could be seen through the wonderful large glass window - this is in the work area, with the archive storage to the south and miscellaneous rooms to the north.

Also looking west from the footpath, the interconnecting glass-walled walkway can be seen. This connects the New Archive building with The Treasury Library (Old Carnegie/Public Library).

Thames (NZ): Archives update 20th July 2013

How the weeks fly by, and progress continues on the archives building. The roof is on and will soon be fully enclosed. (Two openings remain for the large glass panel windows) A sneak preview inside showed how the space will be utilised with storage, work and archive rooms. A credit to the TCHT and the tradesmen who have been involved to-date.

PS. If you haven't called into The Treasury lately, the shelves continue to bulge with information and a growing number of the resources are indexed. This makes researching easier and allows you to make a preliminary assessment online, of what may be held for your research interest.
